Speaker Hackney,
As the new Speaker, I hope you will make sure that H493 gets a fair hearing on the floor of the State House. I was very encouraged to see 64 House members sign onto the bill, and since that is already a majority there should be absolutely no reason why H493 is not allowed to be discussed and voted on by our elected representatives.
Clearly, this issue has massive support all over North Carolina, as evidenced by the sheer number of people who were willing to drive here this past Tuesday for that rally. Statewide polls support this fact, not to mention that 13 of our 14 southeastern neighbors have already passed marriage amendments by an impressive average of 75%! Nationally, 27 states have done the same.
Regardless of your personal position, you must agree that the issue of marriage is significant enough to have it's "day in court", so to speak. Will you do all that you can to make sure this important matter is not turned into a political football and buried in committee? This bill deserves an up or down vote. How can that be denied when a majority of the House has already signed the bill?
Thank you for your service to our state, and I look forward to your reply.
Respectfully,
(your name here)
