C2ActionGram Sexually Explicit,Vulgar Language... Required Reading in Wake County Schools Some of the information we are going to share in this ActionGram is shocking and graphic in nature. Please make sure your children do not have access to this particular ActionGram.
Friends,
It has come to our attention that some of the required reading materials in Wake County schools is full of graphic, vile and disturbing language that is not appropriate for school children. The following excerpts are from two books that are used in middle and high school courses.
The Color Purple
* Controversial material starts on page 1:”I am 14 years old... [after the baby was born her dad] was pulling on her [mom’s]arm. She say it too soon.. I ain’t well.. A week go by, he pulling on her arm again. She say Naw, I ain’t gonna.. she went to visit her sister.. [her dad] say You gonna do what your mammy wouldn’t. First he put his thing up against my hip and sort of wiggle it around. Then he grab hold my ti--ies. then he push his thing inside my pu--y when that hurt, I cry. he start to choke me, saying You better shut up and git used to it. But i don’t ever git used to it. And now I feels sick every time I be the one to cook.”
* “[she] wearing a gold dress that show her ti--ies near bout to the nip-le. Everybody.. hoping something break.. All the men got their eyes glued to [her] bosom. I got my eyes glued there too. I feel my nip-les harden under my dress. My little button sort of perk up too.”
* “[her husband says:] You black, you pore, you ugly, you a woman. Goddam, he say, you nothing at all. ..I probably didn’t whip your a-- enough. .Sh--.. I should just have lock you up. Just let you out to work.”
Beloved (This was the book that was given as an "opt-out" replacement for The Color Purple)
* "All in their twenties, minus women, fu--ing cows, dreaming of rape, thrashing on pallets, rubbing their thighs and waiting for the new girl."
* "God damn it of two boys with mossy feet, one sucking on my breast the other holding me down, their book-reading teacher watching and writing it up."
* "Ghosts without skin stuck their fingers in her and said beloved in the dark and bit-h in the light."
I trust you are as shocked and outraged as we have been since we started meeting with a group of parents about this issue. These parents have 12-15 year old children who were required to read this filth. Thank goodness their children brought it to their attention, but it begs the question:
How many more books like these are our children being exposed to?
Our school system is not doing anything to protect our children from this garbage, so we must! Here is what you need to do:
First
Pass this email on to every parent you know with a child in the Wake County Public School System. Also, print it and take it with you to share with your Adult Sunday School class this weekend.
Second
Attend the School Board meeting next Tuesday, April 18th from 4:00-5:00pm to support immediate action to remove this terrible material from our school system (location here). The parents that brought this to our attention are forming the Parents Council on Literary Discretion and will begin reviewing the required reading lists for all WCPSS schools. They need support from other parents at next week's meeting to show the School Board that this is an urgent issue that demands their immediate attention. If we don't show up, the School Board will be more likely to drag their heels. We must be there to make sure that doesn't happen!
Third
Join the Parents Council on Literary Discretion! (details coming soon)
Finally
Pray that the School Board will receive these requests for help with the seriousness and sense of urgency that they deserve. Pray for the peace and effectiveness of the parents who will be speaking - they are taking a bold stance in defense of their children, as well as all the other children in the WCPSS.
This is not about censorship! This is about discretion, age appropriateness, and a parents legal right to know and have input on what the public schools are teaching their children. These books should not be an option in middle school, and in high school, they should be on an "informed parental consent" list so that it is up to the parent - not the teacher or administrator - as to what is appropriate for their child to read. We don't let our children watch R-Rated movies...why should our schools be able to require them to read R-Rated books?
Upfront-informed parental consent is the way to make sure our individual values, civil and parental rights are not violated The "PCLD" will be drafting a policy on these matters in the near future for presentation to the School Board. We are talking to a number of wonderful parent groups around the country that have been successful in this arena, and we are confident that with your help , we can all work together to make that happen here in Wake County. We will pass the details on to you as they become available.
As always, thank you for your time, action and prayers.
In His Service,
Steve Noble
Chairman
Please be at the School Board meeting next Tuesday from 4:00-5:00pm!!!
